Canada Visa Interview Questions

Prepare for Canada visa interview questions if IRCC requests an interview for a visitor visa or other temporary resident application β€” including purpose of travel, funds, ties and document consistency.

Are Canada Visa Interviews Common?

For most temporary resident visa (visitor visa) applications, IRCC decides based on your forms, supporting documents and biometrics. An interview is not automatic.
According to IRCC application guidance, an officer may decide an interview is necessary after reviewing your file. IRCC’s quality assurance program can also randomly select applications for verification interviews. If you are called, the goal is usually to clarify identity, purpose of travel, finances, ties to your home country or inconsistencies in the application β€” not to β€œtrick” you.

Common Canada Visa Interview Question Themes

Ties to Home Country Family, job, business, property, studies or other reasons you will return.
Travel / Immigration History Previous visas, refusals, overstays or long gaps in travel history.

FAQS

Canada Visa Interview FAQs

Does every Canada visitor visa need an interview?

+

No. Most temporary resident visa applications are decided on documents and biometrics. Interviews are requested when an officer needs clarification or for quality assurance.

What should I bring to a Canada visa interview?

+

Follow the interview notice. Typically you should be ready with identity documents and the same evidence that supports your purpose of travel, funds and ties home.

What is the biggest interview mistake?

+

Inconsistent answers that contradict your application forms or documents. Truthful, specific answers that match your file are more persuasive than memorised scripts.

Can interviews happen by phone or video?

+

Yes. Depending on the visa office and your circumstances, IRCC may use in-person, phone or video formats. Your notice will specify the method.

Are interview questions only for visitor visas?

+

No. Study permits, work permits, sponsorship and other applications can also involve interviews when officers need more information.
